How to sew a change purse

Are you looking to learn how to sew a change purse for your coins?

Are you looking to learn how to sew a change purse?  Well, let’s start with this simple project. Sew a change purse that you or your loved ones will love to receive as gifts, etc, or that you can use yourself!

SUPPLIES:

  • Ruller, pencil, and kraft paper to make the pattern pieces (kraft paper)
  • Cotton quilting fabric
  • Lining fabric
  • Coordinating thread for fabric
  • Zipper at least seven inches long  Zippers at Fabricland
  • Button, or snaps
  • Fusible interfacing and cotton lightweight batting
  • Zipper Foot
  • Corner pointer
  • Pins or clips

So let’s get started in making our pattern pieces:

Measuring old change purse
Measuring old change purse

So the first thing I did was measure the length and the height of my old change purse.  As you can see it was looking pretty sad.  Furthermore, I decided to use my old change purse as a base for the size I was looking to create with my new change purse.

Between the instructions in the video and my measurement of my old change purse.  Which involved creating paper patterns of the pieces needed to make this project.

Here are the sizes of the pattern pieces you can easily create yourself using a pencil, kraft paper, and a ruler.

SIZE OF PATTERN PIECES TO CREATE

The first piece is to create a pattern piece of 4″ height x 6″ width.

This pattern piece will be used for your fashion fabric choices as well as your lining fabric pieces.

Cut two pieces in your fashion fabric choices.  As well as two pieces for the choice of your lining fabric.

As shown below it’s time to create the pattern pieces for the pocket, binding, and tab.

Your pocket pattern piece is going to be three inches wide by six inches long. Cut one piece of fabric out of your fashion fabric being used for the outside of your change purse.

Furthermore, your binding pattern piece will be 1 1/2 ” wide and 6 inches long.  (matching the width of your pocket pattern piece).   Cut one piece of the binding out of your fashion fabric as well.  If you have a constant fabric that matches with the fabric being used for the body of the change purse then feel free to create something different and amazing!

For the tab piece, you certainly can cut a square pattern piece and then around off two of the corners.  The measurements I used were 2 1/2″inches long and one and a half inches wide.  Cut two pieces out of your fashion fabric.

Nonetheless, since you have your pattern pieces cut out it’s time to start sewing

As can be seen here is a video on which this project was based.

Follow the sewing steps outlined by this content creator.  The only difference for my project shown in the photo is I used a button I had in my stash instead of a snap.  Furthermore needing me to create a buttonhole in the tab.
