How to Sew a Ribbed Cuff Band

How to sew a ribbed cuff band

How to sew a ribbed cuff band can be a great skill to have!

Not only can you add cuffs to sleeves, but you can add them to pajama pants, and athletic pants.  As well as casual wear in capri pants, etc.  Amazon Ribbed Cuff Capri Pant

All and all a ribbed cuff can change the look of your garment.  Taking it from so-so to fabulous!

Although in my case the purpose was to add sleeve length to a purchased jacket.  At any rate, adding ribbed cuffs is not just to change the appearance of the garment.   As well as to make the garment more comfortable and wearable.

INSTRUCTIONS

Step number one is to take your purchased garment and turn it inside out.

As shown below, so you can take the seam apart on the sleeve.

Once both seams are open.

Give them a press with an iron.

MEASURING THE WIDTH AND LENGTH OF YOUR CUFFS

Afterward, you will take your measuring tape and take out your ribbing.

Also, measure the circumference of your wrist along with the circumference of the sleeve.  As well as figuring out how wide you want your cuff to be.

Furthermore, you are going to want the cuff to be wide enough to have your hand pass through.  As well as, be able to stretch into the width of the sleeve.

My wrist measurement was seven inches.  As well as the circumference of the sleeve was ten and a half inches in total.

For this reason, I cut the width of my cuff seven inches as well as seven inches in length.  (7 inches x 7 inches)  width and length.

Cut two pieces of ribbing.

Serge or sew the two sides of the ribbing together for the entire length.

For this purpose, you will have a tube the length of your cuff.

Finally, take the two raw edges of the cuff and fold them in half.  This will be the final length of the cuff.

Also please make sure your garment is turned right sides out.  Meaning the way you would wear it.

After that take both of your folded cuffs and place the raw edges of your sleeve to the raw edges of the ribbed cuff band turned in half.

At this time with the sleeve being inside the ribbing turned in half.  Stretch the ribbing to fit around the sleeve.

Furthermore, pin the stretched ribbing and stitch around the circumference of the sleeve.  Stretching the ribbing so you get a smooth seam.

In addition here is a video of a Youtuber I follow on Instagram.  Her situation is a bit different for the garment but it will give you visual instructions.  It helps especially if you’re a visual learner.
