Do you have a young child in your life that you would like to introduce to sewing? If so, this might be a fun gift idea to get them engaged. Especially for a young girl.
Go through your fabric scraps and see what types of fabric you have that can be used to make scrunchies. Keep in mind who the child is and what colors and textures they are going to love. If you have a little fashionista on your hands you might want to think outside the box and use different types of fabrics.

Let’s get creative!
Draft a simple paper pattern to put into your scrunchie sewing kit. The measurements I used for my pattern piece were 3 inches in width and 22 inches in length. Mark the grainline on the pattern piece and how many pieces to cut in fabric. The child can practice pinning and cutting out the pieces of fabric you have selected to provide in your gift bag.
In my gift bag, I decided to include a few scrunchies already made plus all the items she would need to construct her own scrunchies. Instructions to construct your scrunchies are included in a pdf link for you to download to include in your gift bag.
SEWING INSTRUCTIONS FOR SCRUNCHIES

Cut out your fabric pieces. Fold your fabric in half lengthwise and stitch down the long edge of your fabric starting four inches down from the top of the fabric. Create a 1/4 inch seam allowance. When you come to the end you are going to end your stitching four inches from the bottom of the fabric. Turn your tube of fabric inside out. The seam allowance will be in the inside of the tube and the fashion fabric will be facing out. Take the short wide ends of fabric and match the right sides together. Stitch a quarter-inch seam allowance along the edge of the fabric. Press the seam and turn so you have a circle.
Cut a piece of elastic the size you feel would be appropriate for the thickness of her hair. My measurement was six inches in length. This measurement seemed to work for hair finer in texture. Take a safety pin and pin it through one side of the elastic. Hold one end of the elastic and feed the end with the safety pin through the tube of fabric to the other end. Once the elastic is through the tube of fabric take both ends of the elastic to match the ends and stitch on top of each other. Take the open ends of the fabric and turn under and hand or machine stitch the fabric to finish the scrunchie.
Take your gift bag and decorate as you see fit. Include your scrunchies, pattern piece, pdf sewing instructions, fabric, elastic, and safety pin in your gift bag.
I hope you enjoyed this fun little project to spark creativity, the love of sewing, and fashion in a child’s life!
